Valery Alexeev, baritone
Baritone Valery Alexeev was born in Novosibirsk, Siberia, but his voice is full of Mediterranean warmth and color. His career has developed mainly in the great italian Opera houses, with such Verdi’s roles, from Rigoletto, Jago, Macbeth, Renato, Count Luna what is generally considered as a “baritono verdiano”. Yet the Italianate quality of his voice and his artistic temperament comes out powerfully in roles of operatic “verismo“

like Scarpia, a personal portrait of corrupt nobility, or the vile Tonio in “Pagliacci“, in the lively latin cantabile “ of Escamillo in Carmen and Figaro in Barber of Seville. On the other hand, he posesses deep and mysterious qualities of the “ Slavic “ roles of Mussorgskiy, Tchiaikovskiy, Borodin, Shostakovich, Prokofiev.

He was principal baritone of the prestigeous Kirov Theatre ( now Marijnskij ) of St. Petersburg (under Valeri Gergiev’s baton) and the Bolshoi of Moscow as well. In those theatres he sang 25 operas by Russian and European composers, like Mussorgskiy’s Boris Godunov and Kovancina, Tchiaikovskiy’s Eugene Onegin, Iolanta, Pique Dame, Mazepa, Prokofiev’s Flaming Angel, Love for three Oranges, Gounod’s Faust, Bizet’s Carmen, Wagner’s Lohengrin, Verdi’s Rigoletto, Il Trovatore, Otello, La forza del destino, La Traviata; Anton Rubinstein’s The Devil.

Valery is an acting singer, supported by a natural, imposing physique.

In Italy, he sang in Teatro alla Scala, in The Flaming Angel by Prokofiev, conducted by Riccardo Chailly, in the Teatro Comunale of Florence, (Jago in Otello), Shostakovic’s Lady Macbeth (Boris), under Zubin Mehta’s baton, in the Teatro Regio of Turin ( Scarpia and Onegin ), in Palermo’s Teatro Massimo (Escamillo), in Teatro Comunale of Cagliari, where he has sang Macbeth, Germont, Amonasro, Dalibor ( Smetana ) in one season, in the Teatro dell’Opera of Rome and the Arena di Verona, (Escamillo, Carmen) with Daniel Oren conducting. Teatro regio of Parma, Verdi’s hometown, for the title role in Macbeth for Verdi Celebration. In Germany, Berlin Rigoletto, Aida , Otello, Macbeth with Daniel Barenboim conducting, Nabucco and Tosca at the Deutsche Oper, Nabucco and Aida with Zubin Mehta at Munich Staatsoper, Macbeth in Karlsruhe, Un ballo in maschera, Tosca, Il Tabarro in Dresden. At Vienna Staatsoper, with Seizji Ozawa conducting, Il Trovatore and Pique dame.

In the United States, Valery has starred in many great opera houses: New York Metropolitan Opera (Prince Igor, Flaming Angel, Pique Dame, Boris Godunov, Tosca), New York City Opera ( Prince Igor ); Houston, New Orleans, San Francisco Opera. In Canada Valeri sang with Montreal Opera (Macbeth).

Other International highlights include Switzerland, Nabucco and Macbeth in Geneva , Fabio Luisi conducting; Otello, Eugene Onegin, Trovatore in Zurich, Maurizio Arena conducting; again Zurich, Un ballo in maschera and Tosca, Nello Santi on the podium; South America, Zandonai’s Francesca da Rimini and Il Trovatore at the Teatro Colon of Buenos Aires, Luisa Miller, Il Trovatore, Nabucco in Santiago de Cile; Spain ( Aida, Otello, La forza del Destino, IL Trovatore at Teatro Real of Madrid, where, in the Teatro de la Maestranza, he has sung a rarity, El Cid by Massenet with Placido Domingo, Tosca and Pique Dame at Barcelona Gran Liceu, Nabucco at Palma de Majorca, Otello at Oviedo International Festival, Pagliacci, Cavalleria rusticana, Lohengrin, La traviata, Il Trovatore, Un Ballo in maschera, at Las Palmas de Gran Canaria): Holland ( War and Peace and Iolanta at Amsterdam Concertgebouw)
